Note that Internet services in Laos, although improved from 2011 were not much better by 2017; in some areas connections are slower due partly to international bandwidth limitations (a national internet gateway may or may not be in operation yet)) combined with local congestion. Tourists and others on the move are unlikely to be impressed; higher quality connections are available to those living near Vientiane Capital.

Laos ISP 3G, 4G air card data cost – Plans from the four Lao mobile voice and internet providers and a few internet-only suppliers are comparable in many respects. Various data plans cost about the same from four Lao mobile operators: Lao Telecom, ETL, Beeline and Unitel. See below. There are daily, weekly, monthly and longer periods, with either fixed or unlimited data transfer for internet access by mobile phone, tablet or notebook computer with built-in modem or external device like a USB dongle/air card. Promotions occur from time to time with reduced costs etc. These are aimed primarily at Lao users.

Lao IP "Unlimited" plans. There is a maximum that can be downloaded within the defined period. When that is exceeded, severe throttling occurs. Unitel, LaoTel, ETL, Unitel and Beeline compete for market share but all provider plans have data limits together with bandwidth control. Some unlimited plans below do not reflect those limits.

Outside the capital and main cities, where Beeline and Unitel are usually faster than LTC or ETL, choice of the best mobile internet service depends on operator coverage which varies between provinces. Unitel now covers most of Laos. Some plans below are more for phones than aircards or for data SIM use; 'unlimited' data plans cost less now but speeds are reduced and costs increase if daily or monthly limits are exceeded.

In 2017, Unitel may be the preferred service in many areas for visitors and residents using the LTU5 daily data plan. This gives 30GB for 150,000 kips (under $20) per month. See below for details.

Lao Telecom (LTC) and Beeline (VimpelCom) have 4G LTE FDD/TDD services in Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Savannakhet city areas only.

Lao ISPs currently offer wireless and wire/cable broadband services including ADSL, 3G HSPA, HSPA+, WiFi, 4G WiMax, fibre optic and 4G LTE.
